HE WOKE TO darkness, on a cold stone floor with a thumping headache, and a painful lump below his left ear where Jaku had slid the needle into his neck.

‘Hello.’ He stood up and looked around, but could make out little beyond the reach of his hands. Most of his clothes were missing. He was left with just his trousers, and even they were open around his waist. The wings were gone too, but he was pretty sure he hadn’t imagined them, as he could feel a strange pattern etched into his back. The sigil on his chest was glowing with a faint blue edge.

Blaze zipped up and took a hesitant step forwards. The stone was cold against his bare feet. ‘Hello! Where am I?’ Another pace and he hit the bars.

Shocked, he ran his hand up and down the dull metal surface. The friction left his hand tingling and sent a shivery charge down his spine. They’d obviously had some kind of ward put on them.

‘Asha!’

Where was he? Had she brought him here? All he remembered was her squirming against him and Jaku’s shiny black eyes getting closer and closer.

He tried to bend the bars, use his strength the way he had to get them out of the archive, but nothing budged; the magic just raised all the hairs on his body. ‘Asha,’ he screamed loudly, this time, and his voiced echoed.

‘I’m afraid Asha is indisposed,’ said a distant, melodic male voice. ‘Perhaps I can help.’

A faint blue globe leapt out of the darkness several metres away, revealing a single hazy figure slowly approaching. His cage was in some sort of cavernous stone hall. The roof soared above them, several storeys high. The cathedral, he realised. Of course, where else would they take him? Which meant this – he stopped to look at the figure approaching – was presumably Talon.

The man who stopped five paces back from the bars was not what he expected. For starters, unlike his marionettes, he was blond, with long tresses bound in hundreds of tiny braids, each adorned with a sliver of jade, bloodstone or bone. His narrow expressive face was also devoid of any make-up.

‘Blaze Makaresh, the demon’s proxy.’ He smiled, and cruel light flared in his vivid blue eyes. ‘Welcome, we have much to discuss.’

Blaze recoiled from his aggressively sexual poise. He was naked apart from a long slender silver chain, which held a key against his chest, and a pair of hip-hugging trousers. A tattoo of thorns girdled his slender hips.

‘Ah, do I make you nervous?’ Talon laughed. He stretched out a hand towards the bars, a chain hung from the tip of his index finger. ‘I believe this is yours. Put it on.’

His pendant! The one he’d lost when Venom attacked, or one very similar.

Blaze seized it and stared at the twisted silver spiral and it’s delicate green heart. ‘How?’ he demanded. How had it come to be here?

‘I pulled a few strings,’ said Talon dismissively. He turned his back on the cage.
